From 1 October 2025, the new Urgent Primary and Emergency Care Centre (UPECC) opened at QA Hospital and began welcoming its first patients. Helping redirect patients out of the Emergency Department who don’t need to be seen there and reduce the time people are waiting, the UPECC has a wide range of multidisciplinary professionals from across the Trust and its wider partners working together to improve the experience of patients.

This service combines the previous Emergency Care Centre and Urgent Primary Care services into a single space, located in the former Children’s Emergency Department. It will operate 365 days a year, from 8am to 10pm but remain referral-only. Patients will still need to first register at the Emergency Department (ED) to be assessed for their needs.

When patients have registered in the Emergency Department (ED) staff will triage and redirect patients to the most appropriate service. Patients who are in need of urgent care but don't have a life threatening condition can be seen in the new UPECC.

QA Hospital hope this will reduce waiting times for patients with the most urgent care needs in ED and ensure that patients are seen in the most appropriate place for their needs.
