Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board have issued the following statement:

We are very saddened by the news of the meningitis outbreak in Canterbury and the subsequent deaths, and are monitoring the situation closely along with our partners. The UK Health Security Agency is providing regular updates here.GPs across the country will today be advised to prescribe antibiotics to anyone who visited Club Chemistry between 5 and 7 March and to University of Kent students, if they have been asked to seek preventative treatment. This is so that anyone who has travelled home, or away from Kent, can easily access this important preventative treatment close to them.As a reminder, symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia can include:

  • Severe and worsening headache

  • Sudden onset of high fever

  • Stiff neck

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Dislike of bright lights

  • Very cold hands and feet

  • A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass

  • Seizures

  • Confusion or delirium

  • Extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking

If you or someone you know develops symptoms of meningitis or septicaemia, seek medical help urgently by going to the nearest emergency department or calling 999. Otherwise, more information about meningitis is available on the NHS website.
