The Portsmouth Hospitals University has issued the following statement.
Due to extreme pressures on services across the Queen Alexandra Hospital site, an increasingly challenging staffing position as a result of sickness and the additional strain of the prolonged high temperatures, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) has declared a critical incident.
Through the incident we are focusing our actions to prioritise the provision of critical, emergency services. The safety of our patients and our staff remains our top priority.
Dr John Knighton, Medical Director at PHU said “ We need the local community to help us by helping patients get home as soon as possible and only using the Emergency Department for life threatening conditions and injuries.
“Our immediate priority is to ensure there are beds available for our most seriously ill patients and we will be focusing on safely discharging as many patients as possible. We ask that families and loved ones support us with this and collect patients as soon as they are ready to be discharged.
“We also urge you to not attend the ED unless it’s an emergency. Non-emergency attendances will not be seen and you will be redirected to the Urgent Treatment Centres at St Mary’s Hospital, Gosport and Petersfield. If you need to know where to get help and support please go to NHS 111 online. We have limited space and we are only able to treat patients with life threatening conditions and injuries.”
We will be posting messages on all our social media channels, please help us reach the wider community by sharing these messages through your social media channels. We are asking members of the public to help by :
- Collecting loves ones from hospital as soon as they are ready to be discharged, to free up beds for those who need them.
- Choose which service might be best if you are unwell and need medical care – consider a pharmacy, your GP, or visiting the urgent treatment centre unless it is urgent or a life-threatening emergency.
- Call or use NHS 111 online for further help and medical advice
- Stay away from our hospitals if you have symptoms, or are a contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
