Following news reports that patients of the Dentists at the John Pounds Centre have been told that the dental surgery is to close we contacted NHS England to raise the concerns and find out the reason for the surgery closure.

NHS England released a statement

NHS England recently received termination notices from three Colosseum practices in Portsmouth which means the practices will be closed as of 1st August 2019.  The practices in question are:

  • Portsea Dental Care Ltd – John Pounds Centre, Portsmouth, PO1 3HN
  • Paulsgrove Dental Care Ltd – Healthy Living Centre, Cosham, PO6 4HG
  • Southsea Dental Care Ltd – 96 Victoria Road, Southsea, PO5 1QE

NHS England are establishing a working group made up of health bodies and patient engagement organisations to look at the impact of these closures and to identify the needs of the population going forward.  It is then the intention of NHS England to advertise opportunities for permanent dental provision across the Portsmouth area in the future.  NHS England states that it is not looking to remove or reduce provision of dental services in this area.

In the meantime, due to the long timescales involved in a procurement exercise, we are looking at existing providers to see whether they are able and/or interested in increasing their activity to address the shortfall in the service.

Healthwatch Portsmouth will be involved in the discussions about finding a replacement dental service and will keep the situation under review.
